Dear (new) software trainers, training coordinators, DCC coordinators and other software training enthusiasts,

We are happy to announce that we are kickstarting Research Software Training NL (RST-NL), a network bringing together and facilitating training organizations in the Netherlands in the areas of research software, programming skills, applied data science, computational skills and open source.

RST-NL will offer the following events powered by the Open Science NL call on strengthening DCCs:

  1. Carpentries Instructor Training – for new software trainers to get certified as Carpentries Instructor. 16th and 17th of September, online. Sign-up here. Note that you need an institutional code to sign-up, please read more info/options below. Will be offered again in the coming years.
  2. Software trainers meet-up – October 9th at Wonders of Work (previously Seats2meet) in Utrecht Central. A small free event aimed at meeting your fellow (new) software trainers and together set the aims for the RST community. Please sign-up here so I know the attendance for the room & borrel booking.
  3. Research Software Support Training – for support staff that want to help their researchers with software-management related questions. 5th and 19th of November. In-person at the eScience Center. Sign-up here
  4. Annual RST-NL day – bigger event with some speakers and workshops, to bring together all software trainers in NL to collaboratively share lesson materials, tools, learning pathways, gap analysis etc. Save the date: 5th of March

Regarding Instructor Training: Does your institute not have a Carpentries membership? Don’t panic! The Carpentries Coordinators NL got a TDCC-NES bottleneck grant that covers seats for 50 new instructors, some lesson developer teams and for setting-up local hubs that will organize Carpentries workshops. This project will start early 2026 and we will reach out to you again this fall to help us define selection criteria for these seats.

Regarding Research Software Support Training: This is a paid training delivered by RSEs of the eScience Center. The Open Science NL grant allows for free spots for the new software trainers (1 spot per funded project as listed on the Open Science NL website here). DCC coordinators can email the name of their new hire to training@esciencecenter.nl and we will reimburse their ticket!

For questions please reach out to rstnl@esciencecenter.nl!

Have a great summer!

Best,

Fenne Riemslagh
