Summer is coming to an end! 🌞

We survived the heatwaves and can almost put the fans and air conditioners back in the closet. Hopefully, you look back on wonderful and lovely moments, and haven’t suffered any lasting problems from staring into the eclipse. 💫

The fall season starts soon and it’s already getting packed with training and community opportunities through RST-NL or (in collaboration with) the wider community. That is why we offer you an overview of activities that are already scheduled. 🚀

📌 September 7 – Community Session: International perspectives on sustainability challenges and opportunities in research software training networks

Birds of a feather flock together! 🪶Are you interested to join an international conference with us?

This workshop brings together international perspectives on building sustainable research software training networks. We’ll explore trainer recognition, career pathways, evolving technical skills, and practical strategies for strengthening training ecosystems across institutions and countries.

Fenne Riemslagh (eScience Center) and Eva Lekkerkerker (RST-NL) collaborate with Jeremy Cohen (London Imperial College, UK) and Danny Garside (Digital Research Academy, Germany and beyond) to organize this session.

📌 September 8 – Buddy Program Kick-Off

❗Are you interested to team up with a colleague from another institute to support each other in your work? 🤝

In September 2026 the third Buddy Program starts. If you like to join, please fill out the inventory and you will be invited for the kick off.

📌 September 15 to October 13 – Research Software Support Training

This training gives you the tools and resources to help and advice researchers manage their research software. 🪛

Research software is a topic of growing interest for many researchers. This workshop is tailored for support staff who are already familiar with Research Data Management and/or the FAIR principles but would like to learn more about how to manage software better and help researchers manage their research software/code.

  • Tuesday 15 September to Tuesday 13 October, 9.00 – 13.00, weekly online sessions
  • This training is for research software support specialists who advice researchers about software management plans, version control, documentation, licenses, distribution, publications and citations.

📌 September 16 – Code CAFE @ Twente – Hands-on session on reproducibility

This hands-on session launches the UT CODE CAFE series with a practical focus on computational reproducibility. You will learn and apply best practices for writing reusable code, based on ‘Reproducible Research Through Reusable Code‘ training from the e-Science Center.

The session concludes with a CODECHECK call that invites you to submit your code for a reproducibility check and earn a CODECHECK badge, recognition, and a small financial bonus.

📌 September 17 – Code CAFE @ Nijmegen – Automating metadata

Metadata helps others find your work and gets you more citations, but making it is extra admin work, and nobody likes admin. Join the coding cafe and learn about how you can automate the creation of metadata for your research software and take one more task off your to-do list!

📌 September 17 – Essentials 4 Data Support Training

The RDNL Essentials 4 Data Support course offers an introductory overview for data professionals and those who assist researchers with storing, managing, archiving, and sharing their research data.

The course consists of two days of in-person instruction, supplemented by online course materials and weekly assignments. Upon successful completion of all parts of the course, you will receive a certificate.

📌 October 6 & 7 – Carpentries Instructor Training

Together with the TDCC-NES project DC4NES we’re organizing training to become a certified Carpentries Instructor. Becoming a certified Carpentries Instructor enables you to teach foundational coding and data science workshops at your institution and beyond. The training focuses on evidence-based teaching practices and aims to create a positive learning environment. It includes hands-on excercises, practice teaching sessions, and opportunities to integrate into the Carpentries community.

For this particular training we don’t have an online registration page. Irina Motoc (Project Coordinator, DC4NES) has actively approached local DCC’s and research institutes (focusing in the Natural and Engineering Sciences) to nominate candidates for the training.

📌 October 8 – SAVE-THE-DATE: NL-RSE Meet-Up

This year’s International RSE Day takes place on Thursday 8 October and NL-RSE is organizing a community meetup to celebrate! Join us for an afternoon of technical and community-focused talks, including an update from the LCRDM Working Group on RSE Professionalisation and a special guest presentation by Jannetta Steyn from the Software Sustainability Institute. More information will follow from NL-RSE about the programme.

📌 October 14 – Open Science Festival

We are excited to be at the Open Science Festival at TU Delft on Wednesday 14th of October! If you’re also going, we can say hello and catch up with each other. 👋💬

The festival is popular and registrations were full quite fast 🥲. If you weren’t able to grab your seat on time, you can always try to sign onto the waiting list. You never know if you’re lucky! 🍀

📌 November 16 to November 18 – Collaborative Lesson Development Training

From 16 to 18 November, we will host a Collaborative Lesson Development Training facilitated by The Carpentries.

This hands-on training supports teams in designing and developing high-quality, accessible lessons as open-source projects. Participants will work collaboratively on their own lesson ideas, learning about lesson design, learning objectives, authentic tasks, formative assessment, accessibility, and effective collaboration. They will also be introduced to The Carpentries’ lesson-development infrastructure and begin building their lesson as an open-source lesson website.

There are places for five teams. One team can still register; the other teams are partially filled through our collaboration with the TDCC-NES project DC4NES.

📌 November 19 – SAVE-THE-DATE: Carpentries Community Meet & Greet – Developments in HPC & AI Carpentries

RST-NL has invited Toby Hodges from the Carpentries Core Team to the eScience Center. He is providing an update about the development of two new exciting branches in Carpentries courses: HPC Carpentry and AI Carpentry! 🤖 The full program is yet to be determined, but do save the date in your calendar!
